Subcision scar removal is is an effective treatment for reducing or removing the appearance of scars. It is an alternative to CO2 laser or RF microneedling treatments.

Whilst the CO2 laser and RF microneedling are electronic treatments, subcision is a manual process. It works by inserting a small needle under your skin, which releases the scar from the tissue underneath.

In many cases, this process can have a transformative effect on the appearance of scars.

Why subcision?

Whilst most laser-based treatments can only reach about 1.5mm below the skin, subcision can reach up to 5mm beneath the surface of your skin.

This means subcision is highly effective at treating deep or depressed scars, otherwise known as atrophic scars.

Frequently asked questions

Although subcision is best-known for treating acne scars, it can also be used to improve the appearance of scars brought about by surgery, wounds or chickenpox.

Subcision is an effective solution for deep or atrophic scars, as they can reach further below the surface of the skin than laser-based treatments.

Subcision works by inserting a small needle under the surface of the skin. This disconnects the scar from the tissue underneath and also stimulates the production of collagen in your body. Both of these processes help to improve the appearance of your scar.

A typical subcision treatment should take around 30 - 60 minutes, depending on the patient's profile and severity of the scar.

This depends on the individual situation of each patient and also the severity of the scar. However, you can expect to start seeing results after 3-4 sessions.

Here are a few things to take into account before and after your treatment.

Before:

  • Shave any facial hair around the treated area
  • Remove make-up

In the 24 hours after:

  • Don't apply make-up
  • Don't remove any dressings from the treated area
  • Avoid hot food, hot drinks, smoking and alcohol

In the 48 hours after:

  • Avoid vigorous exercise
  • Try not to touch the treated area, as this could cause an infection
