Sometimes, if you could simply wind back the clock and undo a decision, maybe you would.

Perhaps you’re feeling that way right now about a permanent makeup procedure in the past.

Permanent makeup procedures replicate the look of daily cosmetics. They most often come in the form of eyebrow pencils or permanent eyeliner. They take away the hassle of applying makeup every day - but they're a big commitment.

Permanent makeup is essentially a tattoo, and the ink in tattoos just doesn’t break down on its own - no matter how hard you try. The good news is that you can remove permanent makeup with professional help.

Frequently asked questions

Permanent makeup can stay in place for up to 10 years. The ink particles are too big and too deep-rooted for the immune system to get rid of naturally.

We use a special laser to pass energy of a very specific wavelength through the skin. This breaks the ink up, which the body can then fully remove over a period of time.

Initial consultations take 30 minutes and treatment sessions typically take between 15 and 40 minutes, depending on the complexity of the ink. The ink fades in colour after each treatment. Most patients require three to four sessions to achieve optimum results.

No. However, in most cases the treatment works.

It's not possible for one type of laser machine to remove all types of ink, which is why we use up to three laser wavelengths to ensure the best possible results. We’ll advise you further during your initial consultation.

Although the procedure is generally comfortable, you might experience some discomfort during it. At Dundrum Clinic, we have the benefit of the Coolblast Cooling System to aid with your comfort. A local anaesthetic is also available if required.

After your treatment, there are a few potential side effects to be aware of:

  • Swelling and redness similar to a sun burn. The treated skin should go back to normal within a few days.
  • Some people experience blistering. This is normal and does not mean you will scar.
  • As the laser light and ink is absorbed by skin pigment, you may notice some lightening of the skin.

To avoid these possible side effects:

  • Ensure the area is kept out of strong sunlight between sessions. We recommend you use a good sunblock, which we can advise you about at your first session.
  • We advise our patients to carefully follow the required aftercare protocols for permanent makeup removal.

Provided you follow these directions, the skin will normally recover well after treatment.

Each permanent makeup removal session, delivered by our highly experienced specialist, costs €100.
